I believe all the points raised above are true and fair. Nothing hits home quite as badly as the previous Minister of Agriculture, Margaret Becket, who said in 2003 that ..."national food security is neither necessary, nor is it desirable."

In a global market with rising demand, we should be looking to maximise our production capability and operate in a fair market, to similar standards and with the same level of government control and support as our competitors. Instead, we are about to find out how much of the country will be added to the 'Nitrate Vulnerable Zones', which will further restrict the farmers ability to manage the land as they see fit. I am quite sure this will not be happening in our neighbouring EU member states, let alone with our Global competitors!
