Royal British Legion -Wrington Branch
80th Anniversary Concert
Saturday, 15th March, 2003
The 80th anniversary of the Wrington Branch was marked by a concert given before a packed Memorial Hall audience by HMS Heron Volunteer Band from RNAS Yeovilton, bandmaster Colour Sgt Phil Lambton and the Glastonbury Male Voice Choir, conductor John Beauchamp, accompanist Barbara Durston.
The highlight of the evening came with presentations to Ken Collins to mark his long period of service to the Branch [details in the programme].
The branch President, Tony Vaughan, made an award on behalf of the Branch ...
... the former County Chairman, Peter Gladstone-Smith presented a certificate on behalf of the county ...
... and the present County President, Mrs Doreen Smith presented the Royal British Legion Gold Badge - "richly deserved" she called it.
The branch Vice-chairman, Mike Wool, who masterminded the whole evening, presented Eve Collins with a bouquet in recognition of her support of Ken's work ...
... work which, as Ken put it in his speech of thanks, was always for the benefit of Wrington, quoting the Legion motto "service not self".
In one final, happy touch, the band struck up "Congratulations", a sentiment which clearly struck a chord with all those present.
