Current entry in Village Journal

With the end of the season approaching, both senior teams head their respective divisions and are
focused on ensuring that 2010 will be one of the most successful in the Club's long history. In Division 1 the 1st XI go into their last few games undefeated and lead Bear Flat by nine points, whilst the 2nd XI, aiming for back-to-back promotions, are just two points ahead of arch-rivals Keynsham 3rds in Division 4. Both sides have produced strong team performances throughout the season, but there have been many impressive individual contributions - so far four batsmen have scored over 400 runs
and four bowlers have captured in excess of 25 wickets.

Particularly
notable in the 1st XI are several excellent all round performances from vice captain, Mick Edmunds, and consistent batting from Mike Clements, including four 50s and an undefeated century in the victory over Saltford Fairway.

For the 2nds, Steve
Bright hit a fine 126 in the vital win against Keynsham at the Rec, the eighth century of his Wrington career and his first on home soil.

The junior sides saw mixed fortunes during the season, but reached respectable positions in their
leagues. The Under 11s improved as the season progressed, winning five of their last six matches, but, unfortunately, the Under 17s lost their Cup semi-final in a disappointing match at Cleeve.

15 year old Ash
Giles, playing for both the Under 15s and Under 17s, stepped up to make his debut for the 2nd XI in mid June, and has become a fixture in the side following success with both bat and
ball - in all forms of cricket for Wrington he is likely to top 500 runs and 40 wickets for the season.

Match
results and scorecards plus details of all fixtures and Club contacts can be viewed on the 'wrington.playcricket.com' website.

In late July, there was recognition for the Club when five senior players were selected for the North Somerset Conference representative side that met a Shropshire Premier League side in the League Cricket Conference Plate competition. The side was captained by Mick Edmunds and won emphatically, the man of the match being Wrington's Nick Doherty who followed a splendid innings of 93 not out by taking 5 wickets for 28 runs. Nick was also named North Somerset League Player of the
Month for July.

The North Somerset
side, hopefully including a strong Wrington contingent, now go on to meet Worcester County League in the Plate semi-final.

The fourth annual Micky Ball cricket day took place in early July and was a great success, with Alvis Bros triumphing in the final against the Wrington Redhill footballers to take the Micky Ball Memorial Shield for the first time. There was an official unveiling of the Club's new bowling machine by Ken Broad and young Harry Ford, and a competitive challenge match between Wrington Veterans and a team from the Club's youngsters resulted in a narrow victory for the Veterans. Photographs from the day are posted on the Wrington website at <www.wrington.net/webarchive/2010/mickyballday.htm>.

A
collection from spectators raised over £420 for the Amyloidosis Research Fund based at UCL Medical School. Thanks go to Alvis Bros for kindly arranging catering for the day, and to Club Secretary Phil Parker and his fellow organisers for putting together an enjoyable day.

A week or so later, Phil, joined by his friend Roger Owen plus Club members Andy Robinson, Mick
Edmunds, Jake Buckley and Lewis Yule, cycled from the Rec to Lords cricket ground over a three day
period - see <www.wrington.net/webarchive/2010/roadtolords.htm>. The aim was not only to be at Lords for the third day of the Australia v Pakistan test match, but also to raise funds for the Club. It is pleasing to report that the efforts of the cyclists combined with the generosity of sponsors have yielded a substantial sum, which will enable further important improvements to cricketing facilities at the Rec.

Finally, there will be a Club tour to the Plymouth area in early September, with a couple of matches arranged against local sides, and the Club's annual dinner and awards evening will be held on Friday 10 September (tickets from Phil Parker on 862818).
