The initiative began in June 2011. The prime objective is to improve road safety by the visible presence of volunteers throughout the village monitoring vehicle speeds. It is not designed to impose monetary fines or 'points on licences'. Motorists recorded driving in excess of the 30mph limit receive a letter from Avon and Somerset Police, showing details of the offence and are asked to limit their speed in future.
The results have been encouraging, although there is still scope for improvement, particularly on West Hay Road, where most
excesses have been recorded. Our Community Police Officer recently reported that no person has been caught twice so far, and we may assume that persons are at least responding to letters received. A note of thanks was received during October from one offender, appreciating the letter as opposed to a fixed penalty. It could be costly to some motorists, however, if Avon and
Somerset Police decide to formally monitor speed on our village roads.
The initiative will continue throughout 2012, and further volunteers are urgently needed. Please contact the Parish clerk on
