Newsletter No 16 - June 19th, 2008

On Wednesday we celebrated our final Class Service of the year lead by our children in Reception. This is always a special assembly because children make so much progress in their first year at school even though it seems to race by to those of us who are slightly older!

Tomorrow the children’s reports will be coming home. Having read every child’s report I know these reflect accurately and positively the progress all your children have made during the year socially, emotionally and intellectually. A response sheet is attached to the reports for your comments.

Many thanks to our fantastic teaching staff for the hours they have spent writing these reports and the evenings they will give up next week to discuss these reports with you. If you have not yet signed up for your Parents Consultation please contact the school office as soon as possible to arrange a time.

You will find information on your child’s report about the National Curriculum Level your child is working at in Reading, Writing, Maths and Science. Nationally most children are working at level 2 at the end of Key Stage 1 (Year 2) and Level 4 at the end of Key Stage 2 (Year 6). The children are assessed in two main ways

      *
teacher assessments of the work children produce in class on an ongoing basis

      * SATs (Standard Attainment Tests) from Year 2 onwards. These are statutory in
Year 6 and are externally marked

Teachers are always happy to give you information about the level your child is working at and how you can support them at home. We do not receive the outcomes of the Key Stage 2 SATs until the second or third week in July when they are sent home to parents.

Following our wonderful 150th Anniversary Celebrations in 2006 June Clements offered to write a short history of the school. Snapshots of Wrington C of E Primary School Past and Present is now finished and is a fascinating pen portrait of the school over the last 150 years.

June was a teacher but I think she could have pursued a second career as an author. It is an extremely well written booklet by someone who has been involved with the school for many decades. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in local history or the school. June has kindly offered to donate all profits from sales to our school. It will be on sale at our Summer Fair on June 28th.

It seems an appropriate time for this booklet. Those of you who read the Weston Mercury may have seen the article confirming that North Somerset Council is considering rebuilding our school.

Councillor Jeremy Blatchord visited the school a couple of weeks ago and seemed to recognise the inadequacies of the buildings. Our school field has been identified for many years on the North Somerset plan as the designated site for a new school. One of North Somerset’s Key Educational priorities is to help those schools recognised as “good” to become “outstanding.” Ofsted and the school governors have clearly identified that although we have many outstanding elements our premises inhibit that provision.

Nothing is yet finally decided or guaranteed but I am sure you all agree that the wonderful children in our school and the generations to come deserve better. Deliverability and community support are key factors North Somerset are considering. Both of these I hope make a very strong case for us.

Class Structure 2008-9

No changes are planned for next year. Class teachers will be

Reception-Miss Fletcher
Year 1 – Mrs Lang and Mrs Pinner
Year 2 – Ms Glen
Year 3 - Mrs John and Miss Prentice (covering for Mrs Petherick Moss)
Year 4 - Mrs Kerly
Year 5 - Mrs Wilsher
Year 6 – Mr Stanford

All the teachers will be available in their classrooms to meet you on Tuesday 8 July from 3.20pm - 4.30pm. Please drop in and say hello and ask any questions you have about September.

Yesterday we held our Annual Volunteers afternoon when the people who help us regularly through the year joined us for a cup of tea and piece of cake. It is an opportunity for us to say thank you to these people who give so generously of their time.

Volunteers can support the school in so many ways-providing transport, hearing readers, pottery, cookery, playing maths games, running clubs, organising the school library or book shop, as a member of the PTA or Governors.

I am very conscious of how precious any free time is and that makes the support we receive much appreciated. If you would like to help in any way next year have a word with your child’s next teacher.

On July 3rd our talented musicians in the Orchestra, Choir and Dixie Band will be providing an Evening of Music at the Memorial Hall to raise money for Georgies Fund, a charity that raises money for research into treatment and a cure for neuroblastoma. This is a rare and aggressive childhood cancer that is diagnosed in around 100 children in the UK each year.

Parents of those children performing should have already received a letter asking if they want tickets. From Monday tickets are on sale to everyone else and available from the school office for £5. Numbers are limited so please get them soon if you would like to enjoy the entertainment whilst supporting a worthwhile cause.
