In recent weeks Butcombe has said farewell to three well-loved and respected members of its community, all of whom bore increasingly ill health with dignity and courage.
Their loss is mourned by family, friends and community.
Ernest 'Ernie' Satchell, 82, moved into Phippens Farm on his marriage to Gladys Marks in 1951 and continued dairy farming by hand until the early 90s - modern methods not for him. A reserved and outwardly quiet person, he was a joker with a ready broad smile and cheery word.
He loved to socialise at family and local events, play whist and take day trips. He cared devotedly for Gladys during 7 years of debilitating ill health - all the while maintaining a garden of fresh vegetables and flowers for her pleasure. Ernie quietly contributed
much to church and village life.
David Keen, 69, master draughtsman/builder, with his wife Carol built their home at Parson's Paddock, adjoining St Michael's in 1971 - later creating an amazing garden. A former naval officer, David was a private man, a true gentleman, who led an active lifestyle work and sportswise and loved to travel. He participated in Butcombe life including Panto and P. Church Council. A wellread man, David enjoyed discussing
almost any subject. His perfection at woodwork and building is legendary and there are many instances of his skill, enjoyed and treasured by Carol and sons Alex, Philip and Andrew.
Well-known dairy farmer, bachelor Herbert 'Herbie' Kingcott, 78, moved with sister Gladys to The Firs in 1961 from Wick St Lawrence. Overcoming the loss of an eye as a child, his determination flourished as he built a thriving and successul herd, business
and land management. He was often seen at local markets where his cheerful persona won him many friends with whom he enjoyed skittles and testing local ales. He enjoyed
church music and hymn singing from his choirboy days at Wick and spent many hours in his garden. A generous man in all ways he delighted in visits from his many cousins, nieces and nephews. He is survived by sisters Gladys and Joan.
