Out of the Blue

Wrington's own Out of the Blue were pleasantly surprised when literally out of the blue Rolls-Royce Aerospace invited the local band to play at its annual European facilities management conference in January.

Taking over a 150-bed hotel and conference centre in Crewe for 2 days, the aerospace giant wanted to introduce a new theme for its evening event to follow the awards dinner. One of the directors of Rolls-Royce had heard about the band and approached John Rubidge to enquire whether Out of the Blue would like to provide the evening entertainment.
The band was initially introduced on the night by the European Director of Facilities Management as 'a great band from Blagdon'. John swiftly pointed out that the six-piece were in fact from Wrington but had been known to play in the Blagdon area or at least had driven through it a few times.
Getting the two set performance off to a flying start the band opened with its own unique version of a Box Tops number The Letter with the appropriate opening line of 'give me a ticket for an aeroplane' which received tremendous appreciation from the conference goers. The eclectic style of the band’s unusual mix of covers continued, from artists like Van Morrison and Eric Clapton to Madeleine Peyroux, and the audience's enthusiastic applause generated a highly energised atmosphere.

Playing long past midnight following many requests for more of the band’s blend of rhythm ‘n’ blues, jazz and contemporary music, a few new African infused jazz numbers ensured a standing ovation at the end of a very enjoyable and memorable experience. In keeping with the Rolls-Royce slogan 'trusted to deliver excellence' our local band made good at its first corporate event.

Some of you may recall the rather shy beginnings of Out of the Blue during the 2002 Wrington Village Fair week. Put together for a one night only performance, the band have since steadily progressed, urged on by local encouragement to perform live music at private, charitable and now corporate special events. Out of the Blue is made up of six individual musicians who have developed a unique style to perform some very well known and lesser-known numbers, which appeal to a wide audience.
