Judy Clarke - Alpacas

I have been breeding alpacas for eight years and I now have 32, with eight having been born since we moved to Wrington.

It is a long process, as the alpacas are in gestation for around eleven months: when they arrive the young are called crias.

Our alpacas are lovingly kept as our pets, each with their individual personalities, having names and not just numbers. They graze in our fields where no fertilizers or pesticides are used to destroy the environment.

Langford Veterinary Farm Animal Practice has been especially helpful in making sure that my alpacas are mite free.

Specialist shearers come in early and skillfully shear the alpacas, and the fleece is graded and sent to a mill that only produces alpaca yarn.

Amanda Jones, a knitwear designer from Chelwood, is creating exclusive knitwear using the alpaca fleece from West Hay. I am linking up with Yeo Valley as we share the same knitwear designer.

Cardigans start at £90, boleros with beads are £65, shawls from £45 and scarves £45 or with beads £50. I also have yarn for sale in the natural shades of the alpaca fleeces.
